Indoor Skiing, Camels, and Thanksgiving in Dubai

We just got back from our 5-day Dubai adventure…and it still feels surreal! It was so different than what we experienced in Tanzania, and it definitely induced a serious case of culture shock!

Our first day, we just hung around the hotel and treated ourselves to as long of a hot shower as we wanted.  After six weeks of tepid water and not being able to put my face in the shower, I definitely appreciated the luxury that is a hot shower. We relaxed on the beach, started to share our plethora of stories with Dad, and attempted to take in the opulence that this city is known for. Everything is bigger, more expensive, and shiny.  Coming from Dar, where it seems like the entire city is covered in a film of dust, the sparkling skyscrapers and massive billboards hit me like a brick wall.

We decided that we couldn’t be in Dubai without partaking in the “required” tourist activities, so we journeyed to the top of the Burj Kalifah, the tallest building in the word (yes, it is the one from Mission Impossible); went skiing at Ski Dubai, the indoor ski resort at the Mall of the Emirates; went on a  desert safari, which included dune bashing, sand boarding, riding a camel, and driving ATVs around the desert; and got lost in the Dubai Mall, which feels like the size of a city!

We enjoyed a Lebanese feast as our Thanksgiving dinner — since there’s really nowhere to get a turkey and mashed potatoes in the city! Even though I love classic Thanksgiving food (probably more than I should :P), eating in Dubai definitely made it a Thanksgiving to remember!

I’m very happy to be home for the holidays — although the cold weather here is definitely going to take some getting used to!
